About Oceanwire

Oceanwire is based in the Pacific Northwest and Washington, DC.

Oceanwire’s founder and managing editor, Cathryn Poff, is a climate and science communicator, a former journalist and NOAA Presidential Management Fellow, and a longtime diver, kayaker and beach/surf fanatic. She earned degrees from Smith College and Yale School of the Environment, and served two years in the US Peace Corps in scorching hot, landlocked Niger, West Africa … which made her appreciate our planet’s ocean even more. One of Cathryn’s favorite ocean memories is beachcombing with her grandfather near the mouth of the Alsea River on the Oregon coast, looking for Japanese fishing globes after huge Pacific winter storms.

Oceanwire Youth Correspondent Rohan Walker Pandhi is in middle school and enjoys science and engineering. He loves exploring the Oregon coast. Beyond loving all things ocean-related, his interests include astronomy, badminton, and travel, especially to Pacific islands. One of his favorite memories of the ocean is when a manta ray swooped under his paddleboard off the coast of Makena Landing Park on Maui. When he was younger, he enjoyed attending Ocean Camp at the Pacific Whale Foundation.
